Volunteer Opportunities

The Town of Carthage offers several committees/boards to promote civic engagement and pride of place. If you are interested in serving the community, we have included a volunteer application at the bottom of the page.

Carthage Historical Committee

The Town of Carthage established a Historical Committee in 1982. The purpose of the committee is to collect, preserve and display items and information relative to the history of the town. In accordance with these directives, the committee established a Museum to house information relevant to the Town's history. The Carthage Historical Museum is located at 202 Rockingham Street.

The Museum's goal is to preserve the history of the Town and its people. Visitors to the Museum will learn about the schools, businesses, and churches of the past and present in Carthage. The committee also has an interest in preserving present-day Carthage and has established a Historical District in the town.

Hours of operation of the Museum are each Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. or by appointment at other times. The committee is dedicated not to preserving just buildings but to preserving the history of the people of Carthage.

The committee is looking for new members who are willing to actively participate in meeting the group's objectives and fundraising goals. Members serve three-year terms and meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month.  The Historical Committee is currently seeking volunteers to assist them in their duties.

Carthage Appearance Committee

The Town of Carthage established an Appearance Committee in 2011. The purpose of the committee is to work with town staff, local residents, business and community leaders who seek to improve the appearance of the town.  The committee undertakes fundraising for beautification efforts and downtown revitalization projects and advises the Planning Board and Board of Commissioners on specific projects to be undertaken by the town.

The committee and the town have been working hard to improve the appearance of the downtown area with new sidewalks, benches, cigarette caddies, and trash cans, as well as fresh coats of paint and area clean up.  The committee along with the business/property owners are working together to continue with additional improvements, participation, and awareness.

The committee is looking for new members who are willing to actively assist with these objectives and fundraising. Members serve three-year terms and meetings are held on the second Monday of each month.

Planning Board

The Town of Carthage Planning Board is an advisory board to the Board of Commissioners on matters involving planning, zoning, and development.  As part of this function, the Planning Board works directly with the Town Planner to provide recommendations to the Town Board of Commissioners.

The Town Planning Board consists of seven voting members.  Five voting members will reside within the town limits and are appointed by the Town Board of Commissioners for three-year terms.  Two voting members will reside within the town's extraterritorial planning and zoning jurisdiction and are appointed by the County Board of Commissioners for three-year terms.  All voting members will be persons of recognized experience and qualifications.

There is currently one available position for a resident of the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ).  Regular meetings are scheduled for the first Thursday of each month.
